I’ve used Google’s timeline function to draft a quick chronicle of the latest chaos going on in South Africa’s universities. The chronicle is obviously far from complete, but I think the few incidents mentioned here adequately discloses the fact that if you allow a multicultural country to be run by a bunch of Communists, then this is what you can expect!
18 August 2011
University of the Free State – (Bloemfontein)
Chaos broke out after members of the South African Students Congress (SASCO) and the ANC Youth League went on the rampage, demanding the removal of vice-chancellor Prof Jonathan Jansen. Police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowds and 60 protesters, including 20 who apparently offered themselves up voluntarily, were arrested. The protestors accused Jansen of being an “apartheid puppet” and claimed that the SRC at the campus was run by the Freedom Front Plus (FF+). – Full story here.
10 January 2012
University of Johannesburg
The chaos occurred when the university decided to accept last-minute applications after the January release of matric results, when numerous matriculants discovered that they achieved an unexpected university entrance pass... (Obviously due to a drop in standards, no doubt!) Matrics were alerted to the late application opportunity through the university’s e-mail and SMS campaign. The end result left one woman dead (a nurse who lived in London), and 17 others injured. – Full story here and here.
17 January 2012
Walter Sisulu University – Eastern Cape
The first day of registration was marred at the university’s Butterworth site when a group of students stormed the campus to halt registrations. Police had to be called in to disperse the mob, who were angry over an alleged 30% increase in university tuition fees. According to this report the trouble started when about 35 students affiliated to the SA Students’ Congress (SASCO), gathered at the campus to protest against the R5 000 registration fees. - Read more here.
Chaos again broke out the university’s Nelson Mandela Drive campus, on 23 February, when protestors called for the resignation of all management staff members. The chaos was spurred on when final-year students, who had only one module to go to complete their studies, were told they could not write special supplementary examinations yet, but had to attend lectures and write in August while others were given a chance to write... (Why the hurry, what has happened to Africa time?) – Full story here.
16 February 2012
University of KwaZulu-Natal - (Westville)
The protests and ensuing chaos apparently started when Black students threatened the lives of Indian and White students on its Facebook page. The university obtained a court interdict prohibiting students from protesting on the campus. The campus was eventually closed after several days of continued violence. One student died during the chaos after falling off a roof. - Full story here and here.
