This video, which was posted to YouTube about one year ago, shows some screenshots of Sunnyside, Pretoria, and the people that inhabit the suburb today. Sunnyside used to be a popular place for youngsters to hang out, but it wasn’t too long after South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994 that the place gradually turned into a breeding ground for criminals, particularly Nigerian drug lords. Vagrants of all sorts and illegal immigrants from various African countries also took up residence in the many blocks of flats in the area. Many claim that they are students of the University of South Africa (UNISA), which is walking distance from the suburb.
In the year 2006 closed-circuit television was installed in various streets in the suburb, in an effort to combat and prevent crime in the area. Although incidents of car-theft and muggings dropped dramatically (displaced to another area), the mere presence of cameras are not enough to deter other lawless behaviour.
The music video I’ve posted below illustrates some of these activities. The video also touches on other evils such as poverty and prostitution, and poses the question: What will it be like tomorrow? I think the answer to that question is pretty obvious... All South Africa’s major cities will eventually fall into a state of total squalor. It is just a matter of time!
Take note: The music video is in Afrikaans.
