Today, for the first time in my life, I decided to buy the “Daily Sun”, a nationwide tabloid publication targeting mainly black readers in South Africa.
Actually, it was the bold headlines; “Beaten to Death in Hospital” that first caught my eye and made me pick up the paper. The story concerned three thugs who walked into the Embhuleni Hospital at Elukwatini, in Mpumalanga (real tongue -twisting names they give these places!), who then proceeded to savagely beat to death a chap called Happy Ngubeni while security guards and nurses helplessly watched. What amazing security they have?
The second page covered another hospital incident with the headlines, “Patients … with guns!” This drama happened at Mantobela Hospital in Ndwedwe, Kwazulu-Natal. Two gunmen first held the security guards hostage - (useless I tell you!). They then held other staff members hostage for about 20 minutes and took their cellphones and wallets. The thugs then went to the admin office and set the place alight. All the computers, desks and paperwork were burnt to cinders before the thugs disappeared into the dark African night. At this point in time I’m opening my mouth wide, --- not from shock or disgust but from the natural reaction to start yawning from utter boredom.
Rats as big as cats terrifying the local people in Kutlwanong, near Odendaalsrus in the Free State. A quick scan of this story revealed that the rats were probably being attracted by the dirty yards of some of the residents. Others believed the giant rats were the work of witches. A rat the size of a puppy was killed by pouring paraffin on it and setting it alight. (… and to think that rat meat is very special Thai delicacy, and in places like Cambodia rat meat has quadrupled in price!)
Man arrested for raping girl (11)
Ammunition stash found in cemetery.
Truck bust with illegal cigarettes.
Wife bust for stealing cables.
Girl (6) knocked down and killed.
Six pupils hurt in tax accident.
Angry residents demand power --- (wee waaant, wee waaant!)
Villagers bust man with a deadly rifle! Eish! Deadly rifles?
Huge hunger for human flesh. (What the….? These people must be hungry!).
Here’s the “Daily Sun’s” report:
SEVEN out of 10 people in South Africa and Mozambique believe that human flesh makes muthi more effective!
And some believe muthi killings will INCREASE as the 2010 World Cup comes closer…. Please have all body parts insured before coming here!
“There’s a clear link between muthi and business,” said Simon Fellows, author of a shocking report on the body parts business in Mozambique and South Africa.
Fellows found a “deep-founded cultural belief” that body parts can solve any problem, from poverty to health issues. The research was conducted between May and September last year in four South African provinces and six in Mozambique.
Interviews showed that those who approached traditional healers for assistance sometimes had to part with more than just their money. Some were expected to sacrifice family members!
Body parts of people killed in Mozambique were even smuggled to traditional healers to help some religious leaders in South Africa increase the size of their congregations.
Phephisle Maseko of the Traditional Healers Organisation said: “I can’t speak for others, but our members would never participate in muthi killings. We heal, we don’t kill. Those who kill for body parts are witches who don’t belong to any organisation. They haven’t been trained so they do as they please!” – AENS
